Regardless of your own bidding system, it is likely you have been hearing more and more about 2/1 bidding. But why exactly are so many people starting to use it?

Instead of simply bidding game immediately, the strategy in 2/1 bidding is to create a game force by bidding a new suit at the two-level. Here, South bids two diamonds, showcasing the six-card diamond suit and establishing that the partnership cannot stop below game.

North responds with two hearts, indicating a four-card heart suit in addition to the five spades. This reveals two possible fits: a 5-3 spade fit and a 4-4 heart fit.
