Not a lot of money in the revenge business
I loved The Three Musketeers, but I could not get into The Count of Monte Cristo even though that’s considered to be Alexander Dumas’ masterpiece. I have a hard time empathizing with people who are hellbent on revenge. Dante seems like a bad guy who needs therapy. I mean, I can get “this guy burned my village so I’m going to kill him so that his tribe knows not to mess with us” but not “this guy ruined my life so my life is now devoted to tormenting him and everyone he cares about.”
The problem with revenge, from an ethical standpoint, is that if person A does something dreadful to person B and person B devotes his life to enacting horrific retribution to person A, the only difference between them is sequencing. This is how generations-long feuds happen. This is how victims destroy themselves instead of moving on. But sometimes a good revenge story can be so sweet. (If you have your own, do email me. I love your stories!)
Revenge is a motivator for several people in Sorrow’s Apprentice. Fain wants to get back at Eric “Steelfang” for mocking him, and Ix Yew wants revenge on Yseulta for what happened to Clan Apple. While revenge isn't a huge part of the way I look at the world (and Kit doesn't really hold grudges either), it's fantastic for antagonists. What lengths people will go to when they feel they’ve been wronged!
Sorrow's Apprentice is book seven in the series, and while you don't have to have read all the others, the events of book three, Vampire's Dayrunner, heavily influence what happens.
Kit wants to help Fain's team pull of an elaborate heist, but she doesn't realize she's stepping into a centuries-old vendetta.
Everyone handles their soap operas differently. The Lausch family does it with blood and magic. (Free)
