Wait till you hear this!
Thanks to a generous patron, I am finally going to be able to offer Kit Melbourne in audiobook form! The past two weeks I spent listening to narrator auditions and it was very hard to choose from among dozens of superb samples, but Shelley Reece has agreed to begin narrating and producing Witch's Jewel. I will let everyone know the moment it's available for order or preorder. (Likely early August.) I would love to eventually do all my books, but I need to see how the financial side plays out.
Thinking about character voices led me to think about how much fun it could be to voice Marlene "the Spider" Thomas, the vampire who does fake accents badly. I revisited the Spider's scenes in both Hawthorn's Hex and Sorrow's Apprentice, and it got me thinking about the difference between those books.
In most of my novels, including Sorrow's Apprentice, bad things happen and the tension builds like an overweighted trolley careening towards disaster. Usually, I find some way of steering it towards triumph and a happy ending. Bad guys get their comuppance and Kit lands on her feet. In Hawthorn's Hex, I chose instead to let the overweighted, lurching IKEA cart of disaster crash broadside into the minivan of inevitability.
I originally published Hawthorn's Hex in 2016 as Hawthorn Hex. A lot of majorly traumatic stuff happened in my life around that time I was writing and publishing it, and I wonder if it bled into the novel. Funny how I didn't notice until now. As Fenwick tells Kit in that novel, sometimes the things closest to us are hardest to see.
After Hawthorn's Hex, I didn't write anything new for more than a year. When I wrote Sorrow's Apprentice, I was in a completely different place both literally and metaphorically.
How can Kit protect her city, and her family, if the enemy is already inside?
Did you read this book? I'd love your reviews and recommendations! (Wide)
Did you know I've published five Kit Melbourne books since then? If you haven't heard about Wizard's Bunker, you still have a chance to be the first reviewer on many sites! (Review copies also available.) It took me more than a year to write and publish this book, and ratings and reviews in the first few weeks will really, really, make a difference.
