When fantasy and new science combine
I was just listening to a podcast about how our brains process information. There's a blind mountaineer who uses an electrical interface with his tongue to give him the visual information his eyes are no longer able to process. David Eagleman talked about using something similar to give haptic feedback on the chest to let deaf people "hear" speech, and he and the host geeked out about using this to someday interpret other data.
Isn't it funny that we know there are some people who can hear and some people who can't, and we know some people are blind and some people aren't, and yet when people say they can sense things we can't sense, many accuse them of making it up. I think there are things other people can sense which I can't. The smell of the spicebush, unfortunately. The soapiness of cilantro, fortunately. If there were a haptic interface that taught me how to smell as well as a fox could, I'd be all for that, even if it ruined Skittles for me.
That's one of the most fascinating things about speculative fiction is that we can explore the what ifs. In the Kit Melbourne series, my first big "what if" was "what if the things all the kooky people talked about were real?" In the Susan Stillwater series, my first big "what if" was "what happened if you were transported to an alternate reality so similar that you didn't know when the transition happened?" While the Kit Melbourne series is closer to my heart, the Alternate Susan series let me be creative in different ways.

I'd love to come back to the Alternate Susan series, or start a new series at some point, but for right now I'm going to devote this year to finishing Kit Melbourne 11. I wanted to do another heist novel, but it may turn out to be quite a bit weirder than that. In the mean time, here are some other novels you may be interested in.
