What happens when you can't write?

A Block of Marble

I've been struggling with writer's block lately. It's always alarming when you're a writer who can't write. Not that I'm not writing, of course, I write tons of stuff every day, but when I sit down to figure out where the current novel is going, I get stuck. I don't know what's going to happen next. I don't know for sure what my characters are going to do.

Some writers write an outline before they start a new project. Others just sit down and start writing and figure it out as it goes along. I've always been more of a hybrid. I wrote the first draft of Witch's Jewel just figuring it out as I went along, while Parasitic Souls was almost completely outlined. And then there was 2016, when I published a flurry of books and then got totally writers-blocked for nearly a year. 2016 to 2017 was the year I didn't write at all. I remind myself of that when I get too antsy, because that was the year that I painted every day, which got me skilled enough at drawing that I felt confident doing the illustrations for Animal Magic.

Animal Magic

A lot more autobiographical than any of my other works, though in all candor, I never did manage to become a werwolf. (Wide)

I've got a character I'm excited about, and a tense situation for Kit and Fenwick to resolve, but for the past couple of months it's been a struggle to get it on paper. When I write, it's not like I'm creating something so much as discovering what always exists, like that apocrypal story about Michaelangelo carving away all the marble that isn't his statue. I really hope that this writer's block doesn't continue, but if it does, I'll have to pivot to art and hope something shakes loose.
