What do you lie about?

You have an intuition for a reason.

Some people lie constantly, without remorse, but most people need a good reason to lie. For an honest person, lying is frequently a way of protecting yourself from someone you can’t trust with the truth.

Kit and I are both pretty honest people, but we are both very intuitive. Sometimes I put something in a novel and I’m not sure why it goes in there, but I know instinctively that it does. I trust that future Kater will figure it out. When I introduced the vampire Leonard Fain in Witch’s Jewel, I decided to make him look similar to Kit by some quirk of genetics. I had no idea that would be relevant six books later in Sorrow’s Apprentice when Kit uses that detail to escape.

Kit lies to Holzhausen in Witch’s Jewel when he asks her about her bindi, but that’s understandable as they’re strangers at that point. When he catches her in the lie, she admits straight up that she lied to protect herself. At the end of Warlock’s Blood, she lies to him again. Kit’s a fairly honest person, so lying to someone she is loyal to is out of character to her, but it felt right. In Vampire’s Pawn, coming out April 2, you find out that her intuition was right. I hadn’t yet decided on the plot when I wrote that scene in Warlock's Blood, but I knew instinctively that Kit couldn’t trust Holzhausen as much as she used to.

Have you ever lied about something because your intuition told you to, and found out later your intuition was right?
