Body for lease?
I wrote Parasitic Souls as a stand-alone novel based around the idea of a world in which magic is just the newest technology. Younger people embrace it, and older people don't really understand it, but everyone recognizes it as the hot new thing. One of my romantic love interests, Marcello, teaches at a charter school for parents who want their kids to learn about magic. Sophie already knows some magic, and she's trying to establish her career. The vibe I was going for is how people talked/thought about computers back in the 1980s-1990s.
But of course, with any new technology, what's possible outpaces the ethical. Technology moves faster than the laws to keep people from doing evil things to each other. When a couple of entrepreneurs figure out how to put souls into another person's body, they waste no time in trying to make a buck off this.
Some people would like to live in your body, even if it means kicking you out. (Wide)
Of course, this isn't always done in a creepy way. In Molly Tanzer's lovely Creatures of Will and Temper, quite a few humans think the idea of having a passenger in their mind might be worthwhile. In Star Trek, Dax had a sentient parasite that shared her body. And Kit's familiar bond sometimes involves one of the participants taking over the other's body. So here's my question:
Would you ever consider a symbiotic relationship with an alien/supernatural life form, or is that worse than sharing a toothbrush?
Delphine wants everyone to know what happened to her, and she won't stop haunting Simone until she tells her story. But why has Delphine chosen Simone, and will this awakening bring new purpose to her life, or open up more untold mysteries to be discovered? (Wide)
Jameson is a turncoat and a coward, at least as far as his fellow wizards think. As his very first case for the government that oppresses his people, he's about to find out that magic is dangerous. And sometimes, practitioners need to be held accountable. (Free)
When vampires steal a dark codex from my library, I’m caught in the crossfire and end up turning into a vampire. A dangerously powerful—and hot as hell—vampire pulls me back from the edge with a proposition: if I help him, he'll teach me to control my hunger. If we fail, the council’s terrifying Shadowhounds will execute my monstrous sire and all his progeny. Including me. (Wide)
The only thing Elena Watkins wants is a normal life. But when the weird, hot new guy reveals that he and his father are there to take her to a land of magic, fairytales, and dragons. Elena has to claim the Alpha of all beasts on her sixteenth birthday, lest it destroy not just her new world but the human world too. (Amazon)
