You mean the evil dark lord sometimes hurts people?

My original draft of Witch’s Jewel had a plot involving a doomsday cult. I scrapped the plot and kept the title, then scrapped the title too. If you’ve downloaded one of my free short story pairings, you’ll see that the sample chapter in there is for a book called Seeing Things. That’s the same book as Witch’s Jewel, so don’t worry that you’re missing one.

In the first book, Kit makes an alliance with Grant Holzhausen, the Vampire Guild Leader. He’s a scary dude, very intimidating, but she needs a powerful alliance to stay ahead of people who want to kill her for her inheritance. It’s like grabbing a tiger by the tail. In the book I’m working on now, I ask the question, what would happen if she let go? Because if someone has a reputation as a dangerous and powerful person, they’ve often done something to deserve it.

Kit starts out knowing that Holzhausen is dangerous, and by book nine, she’s forgotten that valuable fear. It’s like people who work in extremely high places, or around electricity, or other dangerous things. Familiarity makes it easy to ignore the proximity of death. I’m also trying to put a cult back in there. Cults fascinate me.

I’ve made Witch’s Jewel free until the end of January, so if you know anyone who’d like to start the series, here’s the universal book link. If you’ve already read the first book, won’t you take a moment to rate it or write a review? It would really help a lot.

If you know anyone who would like to read the books in paperback, I suggest purchasing them now. I’m not happy about putting all my eggs in Amazon’s basket, so I’m going to switch to expanded distribution after the new year. Unfortunately, that means I have to raise the price of the paperbacks from $9.99 to $14.99.

Nicholas Woode-Smith has been kind enough to offer a free copy of a prequel for his Kat Drummond urban fantasy series.
