How ugly does your grandma have to be ...?

Cross Genre Fun

Crafting a story is all about what you focus on.

For example, let's say you want to tell the story of Little Red Riding Hood. For a suspense thriller, you start with the little girl walking through the woods, just a glimmer of tension, foreshadowing her later encounter with the wolf. If it's a romance, you'd hopefully make her older and have her meet the huntsman at a dance in town, where she sees him do something admirable while convincing herself she's not attracted to him. If it's urban fantasy, Red will probably have some badass ninja skills and/or some kind of magic. As a mystery, she'll meet the wolf early on, without realizing that he's the one who will be revealed as the grandma-murderer, unlike the clever reader, who has already figured it out.

Just as my favorite kind of music is music that can't easily be identified as belonging to one specific genre, I love cross-genre fiction. That's why there's so much mystery in my fantasy, such as Faerie's Killer, which is very much a murder mystery.

Faerie's Killer

A vampire is dead, which everyone knows means there's a vampire-killer on the loose. Convincing her new partner otherwise may be the only thing that keeps Kit alive. (Wide)

Did you enjoy this book? I'd love your ratings and reviews.

But even if you know how you want to genre-place a story, you still have to make decisions about how to tell it. Do we start with a flashback of Red and her grandma having a pleasant time together? Do we start with Red running through the woods, heart pumping with fear as she flees towards her grandma's cottage? Or do we start with the huntsman hearing the screams from the cottage and rushing to the rescue and work back from there? No matter how the story goes or how simple the plot, there are always a thousand ways to tell it.

P.S. Did you know that there's an audiobook version of Witch's Jewel available?
