Want to be a werewolf?

Werewolves used to be more scary than sexy.
I’m bringing sexy scary back.
Traditional werewolf tales usually have people change as a result of a bite from a werewolf, transmitted like rabies. I decided to subvert the common trope and have shape shifting instead be inherited. You know what else can be inherited? Xenophobia.
In a very popular book about werewolves, the heroine’s werewolf pack blithely murders any werewolf outsider, calling them “mutts.” Horrifyingly, this genocide is presented as a valiant act carried out by good guys. My discomfort with that book inspired my evil werewolves in Shapeshifter’s Turf. In Shapeshifter’s Turf, this kind of racist, eugenicist werewolves sow their own destruction as they inbreed to the point where their entire genetic line is doomed.
Inherited shapeshifting gives me more flexibility with the trope. It lets me create not just a creature, but a whole new subculture. Wolves are pack animals, but you know what else are pack animals? Sealions. I think the scene where Kit is trying to escape from the selkies in a kayak is one of the spookiest scenes I’ve written in any of these books.
Before they got sexy, werewolves used to be frightening monsters. I brought the scary back. Be forewarned: Shapeshifter’s Turf is one of my darkest books. These werewolves are the kind of monster you warn your children about. If you like dark fantasy, pick it up (even if you haven’t read the first four books.)
They abducted her family. Now she’s going to make them pay.
Kit Melbourne is looking forward to motherhood. So when her cousin-in-law’s bear-shifter children are kidnapped by werewolves, her awakening maternal instincts insist she bring them home. But with a price on their young heads, Kit finds herself in a race against time to recover them before they’re lost forever.
Here are some other authors whose work you may like.
Welcome to the city of nightmares
In the Towers of Refuge, regulation dictates every aspect of life. In the underground club Freedom, nothing's forbidden. Both promise safety from the nightmarish Mara. They lied.
Mary had a lot to do before she got married and getting chased by the undead was not on her schedule. Lucky for the Bride, two powerful women are there to help. Coyle is a genius detective and Fang is a vampire created to be a living weapon. (Free download.)
Half vampire, half fae, Phoenix is an abomination in the eyes of the supernatural community. Screw them! She’s more than happy to play human in the cosy Irish pub she calls home.
At least until an annoying werewolf comes knocking.
