How to choose a cult that's right for you

Why do people join cults?
I have a morbid fascination with cults. While starting one always seemed like too much work (and I have zero interest in screwing teenage virgins) close encounters with cults and cult-like organizations make them seem like danger lurking in plain sight.
The original plot of Witch's Jewel involved Kit being kidnapped by a cult who prophesized that she was going to destroy their plans. I ended up completely rewriting the novel, and part of the reason I chose a plot that didn't involve cults is that I didn't want to dip from that well until I had a powerful thirst.
I did use cults as a side plot in Vampire's Pawn. Kit, like many of us, expects people to act in rational ways, and she's tripped up when the cult of chaste, were-deer, running fanatics have goals and motivations she doesn't understand.
The serve a goddess of moonlight and hunting. They reject fertility and childbirth. Of course they're gonna ally with vampires. (Wide)

One of the most prevalent cult-adjacent organizations in modern American life is multi-level marketing schemes (MLMs) In Kit Melbourne Book Eleven, I'm playing around with connecting MLMs to the supernatural. Like, what if a coven promised to teach you magic but coven membership was expensive and they pressured you to recruit people? What if it was like Pampered Chef but sold cauldrons and dried bats at 1000% markup? What kind of hostess party would a warlock host? Could you be psychically opressed by your upline for missing your sales quotas? The possibilities are both horrifying and darkly hilarious.
This week's question: Have you ever joined a club only to realize later it was a cult?
