Sep 14, 2021 4:14 pm
...you click on a link to load a webpage into your browser? ALSO: Please update iOS...right now.
Hi. I'm Jon Fedor and this is InCyber Regular, edition 20. Thanks for being here! Let's get some knowledge.
At InCyber I talk about cyber-related issues and security-awareness for smaller enterprises, the cyber-curious, and the security-conscious. Sometimes we talk tactics, sometimes theories; always, security. And today: A contest to share this newsletter and win some dope Darknet Diaries gear.
Today:
- SUPER critical iOS update alert
- What happens when you load a webpage? (Visual!)
- How to win Darknet Diaries gear!
This NSO business is BAD
I wrote about the NSO Group's Pegasus device-exploitation software at the end of July this year. The story has picked up steam and is now an out-of-control, raging, steaming freight train in the zeitgeist.
The NSO Group's going down as the unexpected bad guys.
We're just discovering now (over the past few months) just how much their tools (including Pegasus) have been used to harm journalists, exploit international state leaders, and zero-day (zero-CLICK) anyone unlucky enough to be a target.
Now this from the New York Times:
Apple's just released an emergency iOS update that reportedly fixes the zero-click vulnerabilities in iOS devices that Pegasus used to get access.
Update. Today. Now.

Quick guide to webpage loading
I mostly thought this was an excellent visual of what happens when you click a link to load a webpage. You might already know all this. If not - this gives at least a 60,000 ft. view of the complexity of the internet and a simple webpage.
The author is Microsoft engineer, Wassim Chegham. Here's the link to his original post. And here's his twitter.
Get some Darknet Diaries merch!
Listen. I don't want to assume that you love this newsletter like I do. I'm not here to wrench your arm to do something you don't want to do.
However, I believe in the mission here: to help people stop exposing themselves online and improve their digital security awareness.
If you believe this too: tell some people about InCyber Regular.
And just to make it interesting, I'll send the person with the most referrals a tee or tank of your choice from the Darknet Diaries merch shop!
Here are the details:
- Send your custom referral code URL to people you'd like to invite to read InCyber Regular (find your URL at the bottom of this email)
- Tell a bunch of people between now and Tuesday, September 28th
- I'll send the person with the most referrals a tee or tank of your choice from the Darknet Diaries merch shop!
- I'll check the standings Tuesday morning, September 28th and announce the winner in that day's newsletter.
And that's it!
Thanks!
Hanging with you every week is the highlight of my week! Thanks for being here.
If you ever have questions on personal digital security, cyber security news, a story you want to tell, or a favorite resource to share (etc) reply back and let me know!
Have a good'un, Good Lookin'.
