Hey, Kody here.

You're receiving this 'cause you subscribed to receive 5-min habit tips from me every Tuesday :)

Unless, of course, this was forwarded to you... in which case, subscribe here for free!

Personal update: Last week I...

  • discovered I just can't eat as much Thanksgiving dinner as I used to (do stomachs shrink as you get older?)
  • played flag football in the snow (wasn't near as bad as you'd think)
  • held hands with my in-laws in a circle around the pine tree they picked out for their living room while we sang "Oh Christmas Tree, Oh Christmas Tree" together. (yeah, don't ask. it's just a family tradition 🤷‍♂️)

habit example

No one manages mail better than my mom.

Know why?

She only ever touches it once.

In fact, she practices something called "The One-Touch Method"

Every day, she gets it from the mailbox and starts sorting as she walks inside:

  • junk
  • bills
  • cards
  • etc

Tosses the junk immediately.

Organizes and takes care of the bills one by one.

Then opens and takes care of the rest.

Within usually just minutes, it’s all either thrown away or taken care of.

She doesn't put it down or move on to the next task till it's done.

All this makes it impossible for that ugly (and annoying) stack of mail to pile up on her kitchen counter or the desk in her office.

Think about it: doesn't it take the same amount of time to sort it and take care of it now as it would to do it later?

So why not just do it right away?

And if that’s true for mail - why wouldn't it be true for other things?

  • Putting your clothes back on the hanger instead of the floor
  • Taking your kids’ diaper out to the trash can instead of leaving it by the door
  • Putting dishes in the dishwasher instead of piling them in the sink

You get the idea.

In every example, you can take 2 mins to do it now and avoid having a pile or a half-done task. Or you can spend days, if not weeks dreading it until you finally decide to just get it done.

So you tell me - which is better?:

  • 2 minutes now (plus massive satisfaction)
  • or 2 minutes later (plus days of irritation and that nagging feeling)

try it

Pick one small task in your life you tend to put off till later.

Commit to doing it immediately, every time, just for the next 7 days.

(for me, it'll be rinsing dishes and putting them straight in the dishwasher)

Feel free to hit reply and let me know what you'll be focusing on this week!

actual quote from my 3 year old 😂

Her: Dad, can I have a fruit snack?
Me: Yes, as soon as you're in your seat.
Her: Dad, can I have a fruit snack?
Me: Yes, I just told you that. Why did you ask me again?
Her: I don't know, my body just wants me to keep talking!

Thanks for reading!
