My two cents:
"The AI race just got interesting: open-source models are gaining ground on industry giants. What does this mean for entrepreneurs, investors, and the future of AI? Check out this article for 10 questions to ponder. #opensourceAI #innovation #ethicsโ
Go ahead, and see for yourself what happened this week in AI:
This Week in AI: The Rapid Rise of Open-Source and Its Implications
Open-Source AI's Breakthrough: Reshaping the Competitive Landscape
In the world of artificial intelligence (AI), it seems that open source is catching up with proprietary giants. Leaked documents from Google revealed that smaller open-source AI models are rapidly gaining ground on industry titans like Google's Bard and OpenAI's ChatGPT. The quote above was generated with Vicuna-13B. Go, check it out.
Here is what happened: Google's investment of 100,000x more money on Bard resulted in a minimal advantage over Vicuna-13B, an edge that may not even last.
While our models still hold a slight edge in terms of quality, the gap is closing astonishingly quickly. Open-source models are faster, more customizable, more private, and pound-for-pound more capable. They are doing things with $100 and 13B params that we struggle with at $10M and 540B. And they are doing so in weeks, not months. This has profound implications for us.
This development raises crucial questions for entrepreneurs, investors, and regulators alike, which we will address in the remainder of this article:
In the rest of this edition, we explore the pursuit of a massive transformative purpose, uplifting humanity by empowering rebel entrepreneurs and building a community of 21,000 thinker-doers by 2025. We also discuss the changing landscape of early-stage investments, the need for VCs to adapt to smaller teams leveraging AI, and the challenges of navigating the regulatory landscape.
Additionally, we touch on upcoming initiatives, compare various media consumption methods, and highlight recent developments in the financial sector, including Balaji's million-dollar bet on the US financial system.
Enjoy your weekend and don't forget to be human ;)
Yours truly,
-- Dom
