Our story takes place in the fictional town of Janus, Pennsylvania. Janus is abut Lake Erie and was founded by the original Henry McTyre, a northern boy who fled the battle of the Alamo. "Remember the Alamo? We don't." was a personal family motto when the McTyres established Janus and the steel foundry that would become the town's industrial backbone. Factories and robber barons used Janus Steel, and the McTyre family's wealth surged. But several generations of catastrophic mismanagement and impulse buying hollowed out the family's coffers. 

When our main character, Henry "Heck" McTyre, was born in 1989, the family was broke, its wealth long gone. The town grew and contracted with the death of American manufacturing. A Japanese family, the Keages, bought out the steel mill. Their most public face, celebrity chef Hoshi, wanted to sell the world's sharpest sushi knives. The Keages revitalized Janus, staunched its population loss, and put a Michelin-star winning restaurant at the town's center. 

A few weeks ago, Heck inherited his Iranian grandfather's rundown Victorian home. Unfortunately, his grandpa still haunts the place, and the two argue over every item Heck wants to purge.
