Issue # 23 \\ Intentionally Analogue

Nov 25, 2020 3:44 am

Hey Friends,

If you have been with me from the start of this email newsletter and blog you will know that one of the topics I like to explore is our use of technology.

I have spoken previously about the philosophy of Digital Minimalism which encourages us to carefully consider the technologies we use. The suggestion here is that a carefully curated list of technologies can provide value to our lives, but beyond this many technologies are simply a distraction, consuming vast qualities of our time and limiting more meaningful interactions with other people.

This week, while exploring this philosophy, I came up with another phrase to summarise some of my thinking in this area. I define this as being 'Intentionally Analogue'

Here, the aim is to look for opportunities to intentionally replace some digital interactions with more analogue equivalents such that the interactions gain more meaning and value. For example, being 'Intentionally Analogue' might involve meeting a friend for coffee once a month or telephoning a relative for a half-hour each week, rather than spending that time (probably more) observing their Instagram photos or 'liking’ their Facebook post as a means of staying in touch.

I think this thinking could form an important role in the 'refine' strategy of my Digital Balance philosophy. Remember, the philosophy encourages us to:

refine our digital interactions so they continue to support the goals and activities we want to pursue but minimises our exposure to risk and unhealthy relationships with technology - Philosophy of Digital Balance

My challenge this week is to actively look for opportunities to be 'Intentionally Analogue'

Chris
