The Day We Lost Everything
I'll never forget the sound of my dad's Mercury Cougar engine revving as we ran that red light.
I was 11 years old, when my dad spotted him - the neighbor who had stolen our house and our family's entire life savings of $50,000.
What happened next was a high-speed chase through several neighborhood streets in New Albany, Indiana. My dad saw pure red. His blood pressure was through the roof. I could feel the anger radiating from the front seat.
But let me back up...
From Paradise to Poverty
Three years earlier, my parents had moved us from the mountains of Santa Cruz - a little town called Boulder Creek, surrounded by redwoods - to Indiana when I started 2nd grade.
Over the next few years, we settled into the community. Made strong friendships. Got enrolled in the finest grade school in the area. Life was good.
Then in 5th grade, everything fell apart.
Our next-door neighbor had sold us our house on what we thought was an owner financing deal. But it was fraud. Pure and simple.
The House of Cards Collapsed
While this neighbor drove nicer cars, bought nicer BMX bikes, wore fur coats... they were building a house of cards with other people's money.
My parents lost their entire $50,000 down payment. We lost our house. We had to move 30 minutes away from our friends, our school, our church community.
We ended up in a two-bedroom rental in Corydon. Three kids (me and my twin siblings) crammed together. We were broke, depressed, and missed our old life.
Life sucked.
The Chase
That's when we saw him. The man who had embezzled our life savings.
As my dad chased him through those neighborhood streets, I remember thinking this was it - this was justice. But then my dad gathered his wits, let the guy go, and we drove home in silence.
The fraudster? He filed bankruptcy. No jail time. No consequences.
But for an 11-year-old kid watching his family lose everything? That moment anchored something deep in my subconscious.
My Mission Today
That childhood trauma is why I'm so obsessed with real estate - especially ethical creative real estate strategies.
I learned the hard way what happens when people cut corners:
- No attorney consultation
- No title company closing
- No note servicing company
- No transparency
- No ethics
I watched my parents hand-deliver checks to our neighbor's house (so wrong on so many levels). I saw how the lack of proper systems destroyed multiple families.
Today's Housing Crisis
Now I'm watching an entire generation - Gen Z - get locked out of homeownership because:
- House prices are too high
- Interest rates are too high
- It's $750 cheaper to rent than buy
- First-time buyer age jumped from 28 to 38 years old
We're creating a nation of permanent renters with no ownership, no equity, no future.
But There's Hope
The same creative financing strategies that could have saved my family (if done ethically and properly) are exactly what today's generation needs.
I'm working on something special to share with you this week - a way to help people get into homes using strategies most agents and wholesalers have never heard of.
