We wear a thousand masks and call them truth. We rehearse our outrage in front of a cracked mirror and believe we are righteous. We point our trembling finger at the shape of the world and cry for it to change, as though the storm outside is more real than the storm inside.
Yet the masks we see on others are only echoes of the ones we refuse to take off.
Here is the quiet fact no one tells us. The world we condemn was stitched together by the very same hands we use to cover our own eyes. Every scream in the circle of masks is ours. Every tear in the great theater is ours. Every sigh, every curse, every desperate prayer for something else is already written on our own skin.
The masks are not the enemy. They are the invitation.
One by one they must be removed -- not torn from others but unfastened from our own face. The mask of rage, set down. The mask of fear, set down. The mask of victim, of savior, of judge, of saint, set down. Until nothing remains but the quiet gaze of what has always been watching behind it all.
That one does not shout. That one does not pretend. That one does not need to change the world because it knows the world was only ever a dream of its own divided self.
If we want the world to become something else, let our own hands become something else. If we want to heal the masks of others, dissolve the glue that holds ours in place.
The great lie is that the masks belong to them. The great truth is that they are all ours.
Remove them slowly.
Remove them gently.
Watch what remains when there is nothing left to remove.
