What Role Will You Play in Bringing About a Better World?

Some years ago, well before the pandemic and the escalating rates of youth anxiety and depression, I was invited to speak to 5th and 6th graders at a school in Connecticut. I asked them what they thought were the biggest problems in the world, and I wrote down what they said on a whiteboard until the board was full. Then, I asked them to raise their hands if they thought we could solve the problems they listed. Of the forty-five children, only five raised their hands.

This was the most sobering moment in my then almost thirty-year career as a humane educatorβ€”someone who teaches about the interconnected issues of human rights, environmental sustainability, and animal protection. I thought to myself: If these children can’t even imagine us solving the problems they named, what will motivate them to try to make a difference?

I knew I had to do something to restore their hope, so I asked the students to close their eyes and imagine themselves sitting on a park bench on a beautiful day at the end of a long and well-lived life. I painted a picture of the scene: The air and waterways around them were clean. Species were recovering from the brink of extinction. There hadn’t been a war in years. No one went to bed hungry. We had learned to treat each other and other animals with respect and compassion.

Then, I asked them to imagine a child coming up to them and joining them on the park bench. I told them that the child had been studying history in school and had been learning about darker times, and the child had all sorts of questions about how things had gotten so much better. Then I asked them to imagine the child asking this final question:

"What role did you play in helping to bring about this better world?"

I let them respond to the child in their mind before asking them β€” with their eyes still closed β€” to raise their hands if now they could imagine us solving the problems they listed on the whiteboard. This time, forty hands went up in the air. Envisioning a peaceful, healthy world and knowing that they and the other children in the room would have a role in creating such a future was enough to restore their hope.

Finnish approach to homelessness has β€˜success’ in UK

A remarkably simple approach to homelessness has housed more than 400 rough sleepers in Manchester, England, while saving the state money. 

That’s according to the city’s mayor, Andy Burnham, who this week applied for more government funding to continue the β€˜housing first’ scheme.

Developed in Finland, the approach provides homes to people without preconditions, then offers wraparound support tailored to their needs. It stands in contrast to other models that expect people to be sober, engaging with support already and seeking employment.

According to the Great Manchester Combined Authority, 413 people have been housed under the Β£8m pilot, which began in 2019. Of those, 75% sustained their tenancies. Finding homes for all the people that need them, however, is a challenge in a country with an acute shortage of housing, like the UK. 

One woman who was helped by the scheme told the BBC that it had β€œgiven me my life back”. Burnham said the scheme showed that β€œif you set people up to succeed – they largely do”. 

Manchester is not the only city trailing the β€˜housing first’ approach. Houston, US, has also piloted the model, moving a reported 25,000 people from tents and benches into secure housing between 2012 and 2022.

I climbed into Great River at 4 after the rainy day today

I needed to be in again.

Not at 96Β° like yesterday

Floating languidly in late hot sun

 

But now, here, today, to immerse myself in another mood of this waterway .

Oh yah,

 

A rainy morning where I drove north and experienced River from the shore or my car.

I wanted back IN.

 I found a (non-Mormon) place

 some stiff breeze and clouds,

but I called for a little more shine and in I went.

 

This is what I came for


This being with

 River being, wide not deep

 Great flow across the back of Beloved

Turtle Island.

 

I know her coastal places a bit, especially Mar Pacifica up north to Alaskan shores.

 I have stood in the strong waves off the jersey shore with three boys, doing my best to remain upright

 

Then losing myself to that pummeling water:

 Fwop!

 She's down and in.

So this immersion here strikes a balance

And equinox feels perfect

 This middle water

 Small me

Easy communion

 Reaching with me out to the two arms of ocean

 

I was shivery when I climbed out

 Along the roadway

In the wind

 

Yet jubilant
