The best bank mobile apps
I've taken a look at 13 of the main banking apps (including Starling, Monzo, Barclays, Halifax, Natwest and First Direct) to see which ones are the best and which ones are lagging behind.
Plus I've shared my take on the features that are a must-have to do all your banking via your phone and the innovations you might not know about.
Beat the energy price cap increase
From today anyone on a variable rate tariff for gas and electricity will see their bills jump up. That's because the price cap is rising by an average of £96 a year.
But it's so, so easy to avoid this. Here's my step-by-step guide to choosing the best deal when switching energy providers. It'll take you 10 minutes max!
Santander to close 111 branches
More branches to go, this time at Santander. Find out which ones are closing and what you can do if you are with the bank.

CASH CHATS PODCAST
As always, there are two episodes for you this week.
#181: “It’s not about the pay gap”
For this episode, I'm joined by journalist Annabelle Williams to talk about her book "Why Women Are Poorer Than Men". We talk about the absurd and shocking recent history of financial inequality between the sexes and look at how the pandemic has both helped and hindered women and their money.
#180: Your Money, This Week
Journalist Iona Bain helps me look back at the top money news stories from the week, including
- How long it’ll take for people’s finances to recover from the pandemic
- Increases in young people and women investing
- Moves towards permanent working from home
- 90 hour working weeks
- & more
You can listen to both via all the normal podcasting routes or over on the blog.

THIS WEEK'S DEALS
I only share deals and special offers on the blog which I think are really good value. Click the titles or links for more information.
I've also set up an extra Instagram account dedicated to the flash sales, deals and short-lived offers I spot throughout the week. Do follow me there so you don't miss out on offers that are already finished by the time this email goes out on a Thursday.
1. Costa: Free £3 when you buy a hot drink
This offer ends today, 1st April. You need to scan the Costa app when you buy a hot drink from a Costa Express. You'll then get £3 in points added to the app to spend on food or drink in regular Costa cafes.
2. Brewdog: Eight beers for £3.95
There's an introductory offer for a new subscription beer club from Brewdog. You just need to pay postage and you'll get eight beers delivered. it works out at just under 50p per can. More here.
3. Bike repairs: £50 vouchers are back
Government vouchers providing £50 to fix your bike are back - but they go quick! Here's how to get one.
4. MOT: "Free" with any Halfords purchase
This promotion from Halfords is back. Buy anything in-store or online and you'll get a voucher for a free MOT, which you can book as far away as November. I had a quick look at there's a bucket for £1, and you might even find something cheaper.
5. Lego: Up to £40 off at John Lewis
Parents and collectors will know Lego isn't cheap, so this could be a welcome way to save. There's £15 off an £85 spend and £40 off a £200 spend. Get the codes here.
6. Easter choc sales
Just a reminder for any chocolate bargain hunters that Monday and Tuesday will see big discounts on Easter eggs in the supermarket. I usually pick up a few bargains with decent best before dates.
I'd also expect online retailers (and those where stores are closed due to Covid) to start reducing products as early as Friday. If any decent offers are still available next Thursday I'll share them here.
